Pintastic Tuesday: Does It Work Edition

I know it's almost not Tuesday anymore. I've been super busy all day. I'm helping a friend who has a large Etsy order due out, so I serged while she hemmed today. And then I set up my jewelry at a dance studio after that. I'm plumb tuckered out.

I've been really, really trying to do some of the things that I pin. Like really, really. So I'm gonna give you a rundown of what worked for me and what didn't.

Make this. The Pioneer Woman is so amazing. This so cheesy, so good cheddar broccoli soup warmed the belly of my sick husband and was very satisfying. I paired it with some "everything Italian" bread from the Wal-Mart bakery.

I've been using the basic Borax, washing soda, and Fels Naptha laundry detergent for a while, but I wanted something with a bit more cleaning power and a nice aroma. This fits the bill. I halved the recipe from How Does She? to see how I would like it and I love it! The original recipe says it makes a year's worth of detergent. I'm anxious to see how long my batch will last.

I had high hopes for this whitening recipe. But, alas, this one from One Good Thing let me down. My dingy comforter smelled a lot better but wasn't any whiter. Maybe it will work for you, but I will continue trying all the other great tips on that blog!

Oh my goodness, was this play dough a hit at our house! So easy and yummy smelling! I actually modified Running With Glitter's recipe and  whipped up some brown play dough by mixing in cocoa powder and it smelled so good it prompted Hudson to take a big ol' bite. Also, it's perfectly squishy.

So, that's what I tried out this week. Stay tuned for next week's edition of.....PINTASTIC TUESDAY!

(Gah, I'm such a dork.)

5 Simple Tips to Make School Mornings Run Smoothly

I am not a morning person. I think I've mentioned that here before. I can easily sleep until noon if my house is empty and the phone stays quiet. Before Maverick started kindergarten, my boys were 9:00 to 9:00 sleepers. Sometimes they slept as late as 10:00. But now, we are up and at 'em at 7:00. You wouldn't think that two hours is that big of a deal, but to this preggo it feels like eternity.

Anyhoo....I need all the help I can get to get Maverick out the door on time with minimal nagging and no rushing. So, I've found five ways to make things run as smooth as possible. Most of these are very simplistic and nothing new or revolutionary, it's just what has helped my family.

1. Set your coffee pot the night before.

I need at least one cup of coffee to start my day, no matter what. And isn't the only bad part of coffee trying to make it when you haven't had any? Save yourself the trouble and use that handy dandy little program button on your coffeemaker. And if you have a Keurig, I'm jealous.

2. Keep a consistent bedtime. If not for everyone, at least for the kids.

I'm naturally a night owl. I like crafting and watching sitcoms well past midnight. But my boys are in bed and asleep between 8:30 and 9:00 (almost) every night. I will be a nightmare to deal with if you mess with my kids' bedtime. Maverick is not a happy riser, so I can definitely tell when his bedtime has been screwed with. Getting him to bed at a consistent, early time makes for much less of a struggle in the morning.

3. Really, REALLY, try not to nag or yell in the morning.

This is a hard one for me. I'm a yeller. I'm not proud, but the first step to overcoming a problem is to admit you have one, right? I hate yelling and nagging at Maverick before he goes to school. I want him to start the day in the most positive manner as possible. So even when I'm about to flip my lid, I make a conscious decision to change my tone. Whispering is scarier anyway.

4. Have breakfast, lunch, and clothes picked out the night before.

Every night as part of our bedtime routine Maverick chooses his breakfast, his lunch, and his clothes. I made lists of all the quick and easy breakfast options and also the lunch options if he wants me to pack his lunch instead of eating at school. His clothes (down to his shoes) get laid out as well. That way, I don't have to think very much in the morning.

5. Have (and stick to) a routine.

This is by far the most important one to me. I made up a little laminated sheet of things Maverick must do in the morning and he has taken to it like a duck to water. It was super easy to create and it's taped at Maverick's eye level to our fridge. He knows what has to be done and by what time and I don't have to say a word. He also knows that if he gets everything done quickly, then he will have time to kill and can watch a little TV before the bus comes. I really believe this is the key to the no nagging. Kids will live up to your expectations and probably exceed them if you give them a chance.
I was going to upload a printable of our routine, but for some reason Scribd is being contrary. So here's a pin instead.

This pin is from icanteachmychild.com and is more elaborate than ours but serves as an inspiration. Since Maverick is not reading completely yet, ours is just pictures and is only things that he has to get done before the bus arrives. For example, he's expected to make his bed, get dressed, eat breakfast, put his dishes in the dishwasher, brush his teeth, and get his backpack ready. All of these things he does independently.

I'm not gonna lie and say our mornings are always smooth. This morning I've already had to practically drag Maverick out of bed. But it does help most mornings. And like I said, I need all the help I can get.

One Dropcloth, Four Ways

I have a very tiny decorating budget. I know some people are thinking that's like a couple of hundred dollars.

NO.

I'm talking like 20 bucks.

I was at Lowe's just browsing, checking out the spraypaint and I wondered over to the dropcloth shelf. Hmm, methinks. The 4 x 5 one was marked down to $4.97. I had no idea what I would do with it, but I figured I could definitely come up with something.

So, after having the dropcloth in my possession for about 2 months it has had 4 different incarnations. Please enjoy my thriftiness.

#1: Reupholstered Desk Chair

This could not have been easier. I just unscrewed the hideous and stained chair seat, cut the dropcloth to fit and stenciled on the chevron design with some painter's tape. Staple, staple, staple, and done.

#2: No Sew Ribbon Valance

I had an ugly curtain. I had some dropcloth, hot glue, and ribbon. I measured, cut, hot glued the seams and ribbon on and tied it to the curtain rod. I like how it's all rustic and breezy with my white sheers. And it's also impossible to get a good picture of that window.

#3: Ticker Tape Pillow

This one took a bit more work. I had some leftovers from the throw pillows I made for my couch and rocking chair, plus a charm pack (I think that's what it's called) my mom had brought me back from a quilt show. It was slow, but simple work. I did most of it while sitting in my floor watching Scrubs. I just cut a whole bunch of different sized pieces with pinking shears and used a plain old glue stick to arrange them on the dropcloth piece that would be the front of the pillow. I sewed them down (took FOREVER) and proceeded to just put together a basic throw pillow. And then I sprayed it heavily with Scotch Gard because my kids are mess machines.

#4: All Season Ruffle Wreath

I used this tutorial from The Handmade Home for the basic idea and a wreath form I had made from pipe insulation. My ruffles aren't as gathered as hers are, but at this point I was kinda running out of dropcloth. The cute little owl garland I actually found in the Wal Mart dollar aisle! It's just stuck on there with pins.

I did all of that for a grand total of (drumroll, please!) $7.94 (because I did buy the ribbon for the curtain and the owl garland) !!!

Bow to my frugality.
