Hudson is a chewer. He also has four teeth already. We just bought a new crib. This is what it looked like after two weeks.
Yowza.
I looked online for crib guards, the plastic-y sticky ones and the inappropriately priced fabric ones on Etsty. Really, guys? $75.00 for a couple of pieces of fabric and some batting?
Anyway, I was about to pull out my leftover fabric to see what I could come up with when I had an Oprah-worthy "Aha!" moment. I have a bumper pad that I'm not using! That matches the bedding perfectly! Because isn't that what a crib rail guard is? A glorified bumper pad?
So, I dug the bumper pad out and did some measuring. All I had to do was shorten it, which was just cutting and re-hemming, and seam rip and move the ties.
Voila!
So, before you go out and drop the cash for something, think of what you already have.

Getting Real: Boys' Room Reveal!
So, I'm about four days late on this but you guys will forgive me, right?
Here's the link to the sad, sad "Before" post.
My poor boys.
We did end up having to buy a new crib and dresser, but I'm not counting that in my final cost. We needed those as our free furniture deal kinda fell through and it wasn't just for decorating purposes.
*Drumroll please!*
The after!!
New crib, hand dyed sheets, faux chenille quilt made using this tutorial and Riley Blake Wheels fabric. My lovely sister drew the pencil drawing of the Hudson hubcap. The frames for it and the Hot Wheel photos were all either hand me downs or dollar store finds.

Now on the Maverick's bed. It was originally painted red, but I spray painted it white. The bedspread is from Wal-Mart. The oh-so-cute pillowcase was sewn and appliqued by a great friend of mine. Bartering and just plain old asking for favors is a good way to get some really cute stuff. The old bridge sign actually came from my husband's bedroom from when he was a teenager. We've moved that thing from house to house always saying we were going to hang it somewhere and we finally did! The wonderful, cute, and functional clipboard idea was a Pinterest find.

The toy box was moved to the other corner and I made bunting using scraps. Didn't cost me a penny. And took like 15 minutes.
The curtain (and pillowcase) were sewn using a $5 flat sheet from Wal-Mart. The flat sheet curtain was sooo easy. I just cut and hemmed it to the length I needed, seam ripped the sides where the big hem is , and sewing another line through that hem to make the pocket. Easy peasy.
My dad made the cubby system. I was going to clear it off and put only sophisticated and Mom-approved decor on it, but I like to keep it real. This is my kid's odd collection zone. The lamp was a little project I did that didn't turn out too well, but it works.
And now to Hudson's dresser. You'll notice we don't have a changing table. It's because I never use one. I'm really short and they all seem to come up to my armpits. The dresser was thrifted for $10. The frame and the Hudson Hornet cars were baby gifts. The basket was a clearance find at Hobby Lobby. The wall decor was fun. I found the Route 66 sign on sale for 50% off at Hobby Lobby and the letters were 50% off too! The map was made by cutting up our only road map of Missouri (sorry, Honey) and decoupaging it to a 8x10 canvas. I drew a heart over our home town and painted the sides brown. The M and H each got a coat of paint to their own. The old license plate was found by my husband on his family's farm.
I'm really proud of this room. And Maverick just loves it and said "Mom, you make the best stuff!"
Here's the rundown of the cost.
Spray paint for Maverick's bed: $11
Maverick's comforter : $18
Sheet for curtain and pillowcase: $5
Canvas for map art: $2
Letters: $3
Clipboards: $4
Basket: $2.50
Photos: $0.82
Total cost: $46.32
It's a little more than I wanted to spend, but hey, spray paint ain't cheap.

Getting Real: Hot Wheel Wall Art
It's slow going on the boys' room. I've had setback after setback. I actually had to buy a new crib instead of getting the free one that I had intended.
I showed you a few days ago the pictures for the wall decor I was going to do and I finally got it done yesterday! It actually looks pretty darn cool!
My sister drew the picture of the Hudson hubcap two Christmas's ago and it has finally found a home above Hudson's new crib. The photos surrounding it are edited pictures of Maverick's Hot Wheels.
The whole wall display cost me $4.82. That is the cost of the small frames and the prints to go in them.
Pretty spiffy, huh?
