From My Phone Friday

Look at my header. It says "Life, love and junk I've made", right? I've kinda been filling this here blog with just the "junk I've made" part.

I take a lot of pictures with my phone. I swear it takes better quality photo than my crappy point and shoot. (Donations?? Anyone??) And it's always right there in my pocket or where ever.

So, I decided to start "From My Phone Friday" which is a weekly post seen through the lens of my iPhone. Sometimes it's not pretty and definitely not glamorous, but this is what my life looks like.

This is what I get to see every morning.

Chilling at Barnes and Noble.

We've had heat advisories and this is what Maverick chooses to wear to bed.

I actually didn't take this picture. I got this one in a text from my husband with the caption "Best part of working the morning shift".

Have you ever seen that website "Stuff on My Cat"? Well, I give you "Stuff on My Baby".

No words, just pure sweetness.

Yep, he might be the cutest thing ever.

Maverick is going through a "no shirt" phase. I just couldn't get over his saggy shorts showing off that tan line.

Don't you just wanna chew on those cheeks?

Cannonball!!!!!!

So, there's my week in pictures. It's not much, but I think it's pretty great.

Argyle Burp Cloths

I want to preface this post by saying that I suck at appliqueing. But you can't blame a girl for trying, eh?

Anyway, the tubby one has reflux so we go through the burp cloths. He's been eating more, therefore I need more burp cloths. I saw all the cute little onesies with argyle appliques floating around the blogosphere, so I decided to do some burpies in that manner. And consequently, grace you all with a tutorial.

Here's what you need:

Cloth diapers (the ones with the padded middle)
Scrap fabric
Heat 'n' Bond
Water soluble fabric pen
Contrasting thread
Sewing Machine

Okay, first you need to make a diamond template. Doesn't matter what size, it just has to fit on one of the non-padded sides of the diaper. Just freehand it.

Iron your Heat 'n' Bond to the wrong side of your fabric.

Trace your template as many times as you need to fit down one side of the diaper. I needed five.

Peel the Heat 'n' Bond backing off the fabric and iron your diamonds down one side of the diaper.

Get your template again and use the fabric pen to trace the diamond shape between the fabric diamonds. (Did that make sense? Oh, just look at the picture...)

Start sewing. I used a small zigzag stitch. Sew around your fabric diamonds and also around the diamonds you drew on.

This is what happens when you try to answer your phone while appliqueing.

Use a spray bottle to get rid of the marker lines.

And you're done!

Now make a few more, so you can practice those appliqueing skills.

Now your baby has something really cute to puke on!

Second Helping Pasta Salad

I love pasta salad. When I go to a cookout and they have those rectangular styrofoam plates with the different sections, you better believe that at least two of those sections will have pasta salad filling them. And I'll go back for seconds.

I'm into sharing the love, so here's the recipe for stuff.

Actually, you know that part in Pirates of the Caribbean where Jack says the pirate's code is "more like guidelines"? This recipe is kind of like that. This isn't so much a recipe as it is guidelines.

So here ya go....

1 box pasta, any kind, cooked, drained, and rinsed (I used Ronzoni Garden Delight Rotini)

Half a bottle of Italian dressing (I used light)

Your combination and amount of the following, or actually whatever the heck you wanna put in it:

black olives
zucchini (raw)
cucumber
artichoke hearts
bell pepper
tomatoes
chunks of mozzarella cheese (any cheese would work)
red onion
roasted red pepper

I could go on. The sky's the limit.

Mix together, refrigerate, and enjoy.

And then enjoy again.

P.S. It's even better the next day. For breakfast.

Tour of the Boys' Room

So, today I'm going to tell you a little story. It's about how my life works.

I was six months pregnant when we bought a fixer-upper house in the town my husband was currently working in. We did lots of remodeling. Lots. Stuff a pregnant woman definitely should not be doing. Three months and $7000 later, the hubs gets a call from our hometown saying that there is a job opening that he is basically a shoe-in for. Long story short, our house is now on the market. When the house does sell it will mark our seventh(!)move in six years.

Our boys' room is basically the only room that is completed, and I use the term "completed" loosely. I thought I would give a little tour because we made and thrifted a lot of the stuff that is in there and I think it turned out pretty great.

And these pictures are evidence that I desperately need a DSLR camera. Donations can be made straight to my PayPal account. :P

The paint color is "As is". At least that's what my husband thought it was called. It's actually a mistake mix I bought at Wal-Mart for $11. The top of the can said "As is" and my husband thought that it was the color name. I laughed for days.

Here is Maverick's side of the room. The bed was thrifted for $25 about 4 years ago. I think it was blue when I bought it, but I spray painted it. As you can see from the posters and bedding, Disney/Pixar OWNS me.

The book sling was one of my first sewing projects. I love it because it doesn't take up a lot of room but holds quite a few book. Here's the link to the tutorial.

The easel was Maverick's "big" Christmas gift this year. Built by my husband and painted by me. It has a dry erase board on the other side.

The cubby system was something I dreamed up with a little help from Ana White. It's not exactly something she made but was inspired by it. Maverick needed something he could access easily and we also needed to use his old dresser for the baby. The boxes are banker's boxes painted with the leftover paint from the easel and labeled with simple labels I made in Picnik and Mod Podged on there. It's awesome because he can put away his own laundry and get dressed without having to dig around in a dresser drawer. The top of the cubby system is also a dry erase board.

Overflowing toybox. Yard sale find for $8.

Ann excessive amount of Hot Wheels. There's more in the box labeled "Cars".

Now on to Hudson's side of the room.

Here's his crib. It was Maverick's before and mine before that. Built by my grandpa. The baskets under the bed were dollar store finds and hold extra blankets and toys.

My mother and I made all the bedding. He even has turquoise and lime green sheets. I hand dyed all of them instead of paying an arm and a leg for colored sheets.

The quilt was made using this tutorial for a faux chenille blanket. Fabric is Riley Blake "Wheels."

The dresser was also mine and Maverick's before it was Hudson's. The changing table was built by my dad. The changing pad was sewed by my mom. I used acrylic paints to do the knobs. Notice the Hudson Hornet cars. :)

I think the window treatments were my best thrifty find. I got these Roman shades for $3 a piece and hot glued the lime green ribbon on them. Four window treatments cost me right around $15.

So there you have it, complete with crappy pictures. I hope this helps some of you realize that it doesn't take a ton of money to decorate something that you can be proud of.
